I think what makes this board and group so good is that it serves a variety of different modelers.

I am not as interested in fan blade counts or even dihedrals all that much. I am interested in learning though, and there is a wealth of knowledge here. Part of that learning is what is new. I think that it is pretty cool that "power players" in our hobby take the time to post here. Mr. Hannant, TwoSix, etc. feel the board is worth their time to let us know what products they have that are new. That might seem like a no brainer, but is it? I'm sure they have alot of advertising decisions to make, and they choose here. Alot of other boards, sites, and lists don't get that.

Likewise, I learned about iOffer here. Never heard of it before. I may join, because I agree that Ebay has gotten way too impressed with themselves, and seem to have lost their way, seeing the customer (buyer or seller) as either the enemy, an ATM, or both. I don't want to be spammed, but I don't think that we are spammed. I think the mix of newb questions like mine, expert discussions, rivet counter discussions, ads, stuff for sale, and general banter is what makes this a great list.

I don't know any of the politics, but I don't mind the little inline photos like that. Nice work. Is that the Sasquatch kit, or the RVHP?

if it is the Sasquatch, then I bow to your supreme skill. I have a Sasquatch Dash-8, and I only hope it looks like an airplane when I am done, let alone a Dash-8.

The RVHP kits... are great, if not obscenely expensive. I have two and am waiting patiently for my JBOT Pacific Coastal decals, since I didn't want to do either of the Hurons... Ebay lot for the win, there. Picked up two Hurons for less than the price of one, including shipping.

Simple solution. I don't trim for climb unless I'm at least 1000' AGL.
On takeoff, I just hold backpressure. If the engine quits, it's easy to
get the stick forward - just relax.

On x-c cruise if I want to go from 3500' to 5500', say - then I'll trim
for climb.

Like others have said, the pitch-up tendency in the tornado is fairly mild when the power goes away suddenly. I havn't tried it in a climbout scenario yet but I've chopped the power in level flight a few times. You do get a mild pitch-up but it's easily counteracted with foward stick pressure.
There is so much elevator authority on the plane due to the full flying stabilator that pitch is easily managed.

My plane is the II SS which has the highest thrust line of all the tornado models (I believe) and even so the pitch affects are pretty subdued.

Still, I strongly prefer a flat, fast initial climbout to a very safe altitude before pulling back for a Vy climb. I do about 80mph for at least 100' and usually more like 200' before I start slowing down to a Vy climb. Around here we have long runways pretty much everywhere (due to our altitude) so I can afford this basically anywhere I fly to.

I've never had power loss on take-off personally, but have over 600 hours
behind the Tornado stick including 2 intentional engine off landings. I
would certainly never consider the pitch up that occurs when you quickly cut
power to be severe. What I found actually more interesting was the lack of
feeling someone put the brakes on. I used to kill the engine in my Hawk
Arrow often and play glider, but when the engine stopped, it felt as if
someone pulled the parking brake and you slowed quickly. The Tornado just
gets quiet with a light pitch up, then bleeds off speed steadily.

In take-off attitude, you would have a much higher angle of attack
(especially when preparing to clear obstacles) with an airspeed of 60-70mph.
If the engine were to quit at that aggressive angle (especially if trimmed
for that angle), I doubt the pitch up would even be noticeable, but the lost
of airspeed would be much quicker. You're going to stall around 52-55mph
with a clean wing (no flaps), so if you don't change the attitude to nose
down quickly, you may drop a wing and possibly invert. I've done that twice
and you sure want to be on top of it. One time I was 2000' starting what I
planned to be a wing over, but it was a little windy and as the pull up
crossed through higher altitudes the wind speeds dropped and next thing I
knew, full stall with nose up more than 55 degrees. The bird did a full
summersault roll to the left and I shoved the stick full forward to regain
airspeed and swooped out having lost 600' of altitude. My pax thought it
was the best demo ride ever...I was looking for toilet paper! That's the
only time I've been "surprised" by the Tornado and it was due to playing too
aggressive in winds.

The Tornado is a blast to fly and performs like a little jet fighter.
Flying one is pretty easy, but I would absolutely suggest training to get
used to its stall characteristics and landings.

After reading your posts about practicing the return to runway manuevers I decided to try it in the 172....I set up for climbout trim and speed...When I cut the throttle I was amazed at how much force it took to counteract the trim to get the nose over and avoid stalling...on my first attempt I lost 400' on my next three I was coming in at about 270'...now I have to practice with the aircraft loaded to see what I need, but i don't think I'd try without 350' by myself and probably 450' loaded...Fun manuever at 3500' and definately worth practicing often....I've had quite a few instructors, but not one has had my do that...This site is full of interesting stuff....please keep it coming...Tim T.

Thank you very much for that tip! I'm always looking for alternatives for Ebay, especially since they've gone "Paypal Only". I refuse to give Ebay access to my bank account, and I haven't used them in almost two years.

I already bookmarked that IOffer site!

Since Craigslist and these other sites are still relatively unknown to airliner models, it would help if we communicate to each other when things go on sale (with the moderator's indulgence, of course).

Right you are Douglas! The Aurora box art is a beautiful illustration painted by Jack Leynnwood, of what would be a MAC C-135A (With "Dash 80" plastic in the box).

A further humourous anecdote, is the fact that the art shows an F-86 Sabre zooming in behind the "Boomless" tanker. The F-86 didn't have in-flight refueling capability!!

I exchanged a couple of emails with you a few weeks ago about Jaime
Walter's Titan II, Rotax engines, etc. Since then I have acquired a low
time Titan II with a 2200 Jabiru owned by Larry Behrends in Iowa. I
live part time in California, where I am now, and was thinking about
asking you about Titan training - I think you are located in Arizona or
Nevada but I would appreciate hearing from you if, in fact you do Titan
flight training.

I have accummulated about 2700 hrs over the past 50 years in fixed wing
aircraft however, after a nasty bout with cancer six years ago (I won),
I have been flying right seat only. Although I have been a member of
EAA ,and built a Sonex (which I sold before flying it), I know very
little about the world of Light Sport flying, but I decided that this
kind of flying in Montana would be pretty nice and not require a
complicated medical every year. I also need to find somone that could
ferry/fly the Titan from Iowa (near Ceader City) to Ennis, MT - about
700 air miles.

If you would be kind enough to offer me some suggestions I would very
much appreciate it. I would also like to hear more about the new back
seat.

I also disagree. From a mathematical point of view, feel free to go back
let's say, a month, and calculate the percentage of regular threads vs sales
emails, and I doubt you'll come up with maybe 5%.

The others covered it pretty much. It's funny that for such an easily
accessible and iconic aircraft, there is not a "perfect' kit of it yet!

Anyway, one thing nobody mentioned (and it depends on the price you can get
the Walther's kit for and amount of work you are willing to do) is that you
can get it AND the Revellogram 1:90 kit, and use parts from both to build a
very nice HO model, if that's your aim. Otherwise, just build it OOB for
the fun of it as Mark said.

The sizes between those two kits are so close that many parts of one kit fit
the other.

Well, I completely disagree. I have endured countless posts about number and direction of fan blades, shapes of fuselages, etc., decals and aircraft variants that I don't care about, because those topics are important to many members. I care about certain decals, certain aircraft, and I feel privileged to be a part of a very knowledgeable group, all members of which have always been very helpful, polite, and tolerant of some of my very basic, newbie, and/or ignorant questions! While not exactly on point, I am very interested in actual airline and aircraft operations, so I don't mind the occasional sidetrack, and I enjoy historical comments as well. While I don't troll eBay for airliners (I do for Revell warships), I am always interested to see if someone has a unique model for sale. That is how I got a 1/144 vacuform Pan American Airways S-40 almost two years ago, though I would rather have had a Panagra S-38. Or maybe it was an S-42, I
forgot. See, I am not an expert or a rivet counter, but I greatly enjoy the flexibility that AMD has offered me, including some friendships! In summary, I think AMD has been fine in allowing the occasional announcement of items going for sale, as the prices are sometimes better than eBay, and it doesn't cost the seller any fees.

[Titanaircraft] titan training

I'm located in Bay City Tx. I hold a light sport cert PPC rating and tail dragger (legend cub) rating. I own a predator PPC which is on consignment for sell. Once the PPC sells I have been looking at Titan's and have a strong interest in purchasing one.I've been reading NTSB safety reports on Titans and I think it would be to my benefit to get some time behind a titan stick before I commit to a purchase. Anyone Know of a flight instructor for Titans close to Bay City Tx.

Let's face it, with the worldwide economy in the tank, even the most ardent modelers are trying to make ends meet by selling excess "stock". It's therefore a great time to be buying while prices are low. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Yes, I would agree with the comments already posted on the Walthers 1/87 DC-3. Nice enough, but it has it shape faults (what DC-3 kit doesn't?). Not a lot of detail though.
Best part of the kit are the terrific decal sheets - but they don't fit many other kits! Like the kit, the marks are basic - no details.
P&W engines - and yes - it's really a C47 kit but thanks for the passenger option fuselage!
New, it's an expensive kit but it's been out of the line for several years now. I buy 'em when I can find 'em..

I usually avoid Walthers because, as a model railroader, I found their products mediocre and very overpriced. I looked up the current price on the DC-3 ($25) and am betting there are better kits (Revell) at better prices.

They issued it awhile back (10 years ago or more) in both airline and military. The boxart showed a Delta DC-3, but the panel indicated the markings in the box. It is not 100% accurate and has many 'faults' but it goes together well, and has the look of a DC-3. I have built three and to me it looks like a DC-3, faults not withstanding.
Too much dihedral, fuselage to square, (DC-2ish) tail incorrect shape. Build it and have some fun with it.

Actually, I have a built Otaki L-1011 with Revell DELTA decals. I built it way back in 1987. It's a brush and spray job. Not IPMS quality, but still very valuable! I'll sell it, too! :>)

Just wondering, but since the Skyteam scheme is all the same with the exception of the name of the airline below the window line, why not add decals for each of the various members of Skyteam? That way, you could model any of the members of Skyteam since most, if not all, members are using widebodies for their Skyteam aircraft. Just a thougth.

Does anyone have the instruction sheet & decal sheet available
they would considering scanning for the Comet Models Boeing
707 kit (the 1/125th scale version)?

I recently got the Aurora KC-135 kit which is the Comet tooling
reboxed. Oddly enough though the model was marketed as a KC-135
it doesn't include the refueling pod / boom!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the "Titan Aircraft R&D Facility - Western Division." Just kidding
(sorta) - Mark & Kimberly just call it "our garage." There have been a
lot of great innovations coming out of their garage & basement in the
past several years. Gear suspension, fuel fillers, control surface
hinges, seats....Mark & Kimberly make good stuff better.

I was out that way recently and I stopped by for a visit. I'll be back
again about November 1st or 2nd.

A list of what you have to sell would be fine to post here, and I'm sure
folks would be greatful for getting a chance at the decals, especially if
they are rare and hard to find, before you put them on Ebay.

After the initial listing email, further business between you and the buyers
should take place OFF-LIST.

Make sure to let people know of any special terms (such as will/will not
ship overseas, payment options, any special charges, etc) in your initial
sale list email.

Good Evening Everyone;

I am not overly impressed with Ebay.... although I have sold and bought items there since they began. Those include lots of model kits, many old and hard to find. Ebay was great when they started out but have since gotten greedy. I also get quite ticked over having to pay using PayPal to make Ebay purchases; in the old days I could specify postal orders or personal checks: no more!..........May I suggest that those of us who have or want an old kit use Craigslist as the venue for the physical transaction and if no one minds just leave a message here of want items or ones for sale. Better still leave a URL for the ad and we can go right to it.

E.D., are you doing a flight of fancy VC-25A? Hasegawa actually released a 1/200 VC-25A kit, complete with the proper engines and some lumps and bumps (IFR hump and countermeasures). The only big items missing are the forward facing stabilizer antennae (found on their E-4B kit). The dual APU's, missing integral stairs and other details are up to you.

Not sure how the 747-300 kit is anywhere near close to a VC-25A, though.

Completely unrelated to the ebay kerfuffle, but do you know of any online links showing completed Otaki Tristar builds in the modern era?

I have seen loads of pics for Revell, Airfix, Hasegawa and Doyusha 1/100 builds, but never the Otaki 1/144. Maybe I'm just missing something.

In fact, the only pictures I've seen of this kit online are in Andrew Abshier's in-box review (unbuilt).

OK Folks,

1. This was nothing but an unfortunate misunderstanding and I'm sure there
are more important things to get ticked off about, such as dropping your
just-finished Otaki Tristar on the floor :)

2. Tony could have stated it in his original email that the reason he was
asking for the rare kits was so he would know what to put up for sale on
Ebay; this would have avoided this, but in a sense, I'm glad it came up so
we can clean up the air regarding it.

3. It may not be the best place but nevertheless, Ebay is just another
selling venue. I think the majority of AMDers would want to know when
something (new or old) is available, as evidenced by AMD member direct sales
announcements to the list, or store announcements such as from Russell,
David Hannant, Two Six, etc. Nobody is complaining about those, so I don't
see why Ebay sale announcements would be a problem. Sure, some of us have
some strong personal feelings about Ebay, but you know, just like you DON'T
HAVE TO participate in a member sale or buy from Russell or David, you DON'T
HAVE TO buy from Ebay.

4. Keep in mind that it would be nice to have a separate section for sale
items such as a different forum, but in reality, we are a list, not a real
forum website, so we have to send everything through a single channel. But
since we don't have a problem with an extraordinary amount of 'for sale'
emails, we can go on as we have in the past, and you can always delete the
sale emails you don't care about, just like you delete all the other AMD
thread emails you may not be interested in.

5. Regarding Gerry's idea on putting the word "EBAY" on the subject line, I
think it is a great idea. We could start using prefixes such as "FOR SALE
ON EBAY" or "FOR SALE BY MEMBER" or something similar, so whoever looks at
the subject line can decide whether to read further or just delete the
email. For example, Ray from Two Six uses the subject line "New Decals", so
when you see his email you know it is an announcement for new decals. Now,
I am not the list owner, so I cannot (and don't want to) impose a rule about
putting SALE keywords in the subject line, but as a co-moderator, I can -and
will- ask you to use your good judgement, common courtesy and consideration
for the other members, when sending sale emails. Sure, on occassion we may
miss a step and few feathers may get ruffled, but we'll just straighten
things out and go on modelling.

All Air France 777s are GE90-powered. They have 777-200ERs & -300ERs. As far as I am aware there is no kit / conversion of the -300ER which has the larger diameter GE90-115 and raked wing-tips. The wing-tips would be relatively easy to make, but the engines have a noticably larger diameter and different fan blades compared to the basic GE90.

As far as typos are concerned, I have seen John Burns make them before. As a matter of fact, I have seen many pages of corrections to his books. In his "plastic Aircraft Kits of the Twentieth Century", printed in 2003, the Lincoln/ATP/AA kit is listed as being 1/96. That's why we really have to have someone measure the kit and compare it to the real dimensions, if it is really important.

(they shot themselves in the foot with their own greed) You pretty much have to be a power seller now just to have your item displayed on a default search. It's tough to sell when your item is on page 26 of an item search, and if the potential buyer specifies the parameters of the search and your item DOES manage to get found, exiting the page automatically defauts back to Ebay's default search parameters, and your item is back on page 26 again. The new feedback system is criminal. Sellers can't even leave negative or neutral feedback for bad buyers. Add to this that Ebay no longer allows checks or money orders, but demands PayPal, who can, and will, withhold payment for up to 21 days until the seller ships the item and gets a positive feedback from the buyer, means the seller is at risk of losing the item without being paid. I have heard many a story of PayPal awarding refunds to unscrupulous buyers who SAID they were unsatisfied after receiving the item. They did not leave a positive feedback, so the seller did NOT get paid. The buyer kept the item anyway. The seller was out the item and the money, AND was not even allowed to leave a bad feedback! There are buyers out there taking advantage of this and changing their ID on a regular basis as they rip off sellers left and right, and the sellers are helpless under the new rules. As Ebay owns PayPal, this extortion is keeping millions of former sellers from ever going back to Ebay, unless they return to their old ways of doing business. Also, as fees escalate, now Ebay has capped what a seller can charge for handling. My last few weeks as a seller in late 2007 and early 2008 I actually had weeks where my fees exceeded my net income! It sure has changed from when I started selling in 1999!

[AMD] Finnair MD-11

Just an FYI. That Finnair MD-11 Santa Claus decal is available from Draw in several scales; they make the same one for other aircraft as well. I have a set for the 757-200 in 1/144.

I think the research guy should have let people know the reason behind his research, but otherwise I understand his motives. I also see alot of vendors announcing their newest offerings, so if that is okay (and I think it is) how is a private seller any different?

I have a list of obscure decals I was going to put on ebay at some point. I'd rather give AMD a shot at them, so can I put them up here before I deal with Ebay? It'd be all PayPal and POMOs.

Examples of what I have to sell are ATP Braniff decals for the Hawk C-131 kit, Big D-Cal Eastern decals for the Revell Connie and Microscale 20-10 Aloha/Air California 737 (assume 100/200) in 1/200. About 40-50 well-kept sets, in all.

Thanks for your comments, and I suggest that all eBay postings should include "eBay" in the subject line.

I feel I am giving AMD members "first choice" by passing along a note that I've placed an item of interest on eBay. However, there is no way I'm going to offer an item at a fixed price on AMD prior to eBay sale. Sorry, but I've been burned too many times by promised sales that never materialize, and feel I really need the support structure of eBay. Don't blame me, blame a few of our current or past AMD members.

I don't personally post "links" on any of my eBay sales, just a short note that an item or items are available from eBay. Perhaps one in 20 of my eBay airliner sales are to people I recognize from AMD.

As to "other groups", none of the 13 modelling Yahoo groups in my profile prohibit notes of eBay sales.

I've responded personally to Tony, apologising if my post yesterday caused him any upset. I was replying during a particularly bad day, & on reflection my post does indeed read a bit 'over the top'. I ignored the old 'read & reag again before sending' tip. I didn't intend to 'bash' Tony in any way, but I agree my post reads that way.

I've also responded to Gerry's post this morning with how the other groups & forums I'm on operate with regard to links to e-bay, & as I said in there that's just my personal opinion to the 'best' way that they can be handled. Obviously others have different opinions, but mine remains the same!

Well, Gerry, this is one of the very few groups or forums that I personally am a member of that still allows members to post links to e-bay sales. And of the others that do, the etiquette is at least to offer the group members the sales items at a fixed price first to avoid the ridiculous feeding frenzy that can occur on that certain auction site. And if it is a rare item, by all means set the price at a fair level that reflects its value - but at least give the group first go! If there's no interest from the group, then by all means stick it on fee-bay.

The objective of AMD notes on eBay airliner modeling items is for the benefit of the potential purchaser. No, eBay doesn't need our help, nor actually do most of the sellers. There are lots of buyers out there who aren't on AMD. Some of us post notes of sales on AMD to give members a headstart on bidding, if that's what they desire. For the person looking for a 1/100 scale Nitto DC-3 with Stagelines decals, for example, a note that an AMD member is placing one on eBay can be a significant benefit. He or she might not discover the item without the benefit of the AMD posting.

If these eBay sales notes are offensive, simply move the curser over the "delete" key and press.

BTW, the Nitto DC-3 is 1/100 scale, not 1/96, and isn't the one sold by ATP. This is an original Japanese mold, and (some of us believe) was the "master" for the Minicraft DC-3 in 1/144 scale.

I didnt mean to start an argument.Entex was an importer in this country.The moulds were Nitto.I am comparing 2 built ups,so it is hard to measure.The ATP kit is slightly longer,by maybe 1/8 inch.The wing span is maybe 1/32 longer on the Nitto kit.The wings are also placed slightly more forward on the fuselage on the Nitto kit,same as the Minicraft.Both were advertised as 1/100.Most Nitto kits were 1/100.Lincoln/IM/Kader were all different scales.The Connie which was a copy,but not completely of the old Hawk kit was 1/140.The F27 and Viscount were around 1/120.The DC7C and Brittania were about 1/160.

Hi Jim,

Not any time soon. This one took more than 30 hours spread out over the last year to engineer and complete. They just wouldn't be worth our time to sell. Since I fabricated the cushion and upholstery, I don't know what it would cost to have them made production style. I would like to see some interest from the factory. If it was there, we'd consider sending it in to have them copy it.

My solution was to drill a 3/16" hole in a 3/4"-thick block of wood,
put the drill through the block of wood and the existing holes, and
hot-glue the block in place.

Remove the drill, insert the gear leg, drill the hole.

Knock the block of wood off (it stays when you need it, but a sharp
blow will dislodge it) and repeat for the next hole.

Just as a clarification, I don't think the Minicraft kit is a copy of the Entex kit, it is the Entex kit. Which was originally a Nitto kit. Entex did not make any of their own kits, they were all Japanese molds that were imported into and boxed in the U.S. One of the important people at Entex was Al Trendle. I forgot what his position was. He later started Minicraft, and used some of the same molds that were used by Entex. They may have been purchased from the Japanese companies, as the logos that were engraved on the molds were removed, but, I think "copying" is a thing of the past, excluding the Chinese models, of course.

Has anyone actually measured the ATP/Lincoln kit so that they can definitely say it is 1/96 or 1/100 scale? Considering the time period, I would expect it to be 1/96, as that was the more common scale, next to Airfix and 1/144, especially for Lincoln and Hawk. But, until someone actually measures it, All this bickering will not settle anything.

Really guys? I thought this board was a friendly one, not a bashful one. Is it really Tony's fault if he's giving us a heads-up on some nice e-bay deals that otherwise we would have never found; like that Finnair MD-11 kit. Is it his fault that he wants to use the secure way of purchase transactions via ebay? Hell, I'd rather buy via ebay than send paypal or money orders to some foreign address and never get a kit (Tony would never not come through though, though some members on here might rip others off); at least with e-bay if something goes wrong you can contact e-bay and get your money back most of the times. And from the sounds of it, some you ya'll sound like not-so-pleasant guys. You know, there are other ways of going about this than bashing him in front of the group, like just ignoring him. We're all grown adults. I rarely post on AMD or read many posts so I cant say if Tony has done anything bad in the past; I only saw these posts. As I say again, that Finnair kit is a helluva hard gem to find so I am greatful that Tony even posted the e-bay link here.
