I'm a bit late chiming in on the worst airliner kits. I just got back from Rochester, NY after 5 days of golf and watching the ladies of the LPGA. I even made it onto the TV news TWICE while in the gallery! Once, during the Pro-Am, I was only a couple of feet from Paula Creamer when the TV news caught me filming her with my old VHS camcoder! 'Made my week! :>)
Anyhoo, I'd have to rank the Masterkit 737-300 among the worst kits. My fuselage halves were of such different lengths, I ended up chopping BOTH down and making a 737-500 out of the thing! I did manage to make it presentable. 'Even got it published by Gerry Cole in the Captain's Log way back in early 90's in UNITED colors. I actually think the included Scalemaster UNITED decals were better than the old ATP decals, except the "U" on the right side fuselage tilted the wrong way. The collectible box was made of very thick cardboard and the box art was to die for. I used to collect the kits for the decals and boxes!!!!
I built the Leoman resin 737-300 as well, and the oversized engines slung so low, the gear looked more like they belonged on an A320 than a 737. Still, it was the only thing going at the time, and I was ecstatic to have built it for my USAir fleet.
As for 747SP conversions, let us not forget the Sasquatch resin 747SP. Tho not up to Alan Hess standards, it did make for a nice model. The Allan Hess was designed for the Revell 747 kit, while the Sasquatch was made to fit the Airfix. What was nice about using the Airfix wings was that the flap track fairings were add-on, so you simply left them off and plugged the tiny mounting pin holes, whereas on the Revell wings you had to surgically remove the built-in fairings and patch the huge holes before assembling the wing halves. If you acquired your Revell 747SP/ Allen Hess Conversion with wings already assembled (like I did) and the flap track fairings were still there, you are screwed!
Sasquatch also made a 747SP conversion for the Hasegawa kit. Last I knew, all of the Sasquatch molds went to our dear departed friend E.J. Weldon at CBS Models. Does anyone know what happened/ will happen to his inventory?
